International rail journeys to be bookable via the SBB app

International rail journeys to be bookable via the SBB app

From November, people in Switzerland will be given even greater access and choice when purchasing public transport tickets, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has confirmed. The rail operator announced that a wealth of international journeys will soon be bookable on your mobile phone, via the SBB app.

Swiss Federal Railways offers greater access to international tickets

Writing in a statement, SBB confirmed that in response to rising demand, users of their app will soon be able to book train tickets for international rail journeys to and from Switzerland. The new function will be rolled out to the main SBB app in November 2024, but can already be tried out in the SBB Preview app.

Soon, users will be able to purchase tickets for the most popular public transport services between Swiss cities and abroad, operated both by SBB and other providers. If the rail company operating the services has a seat reservation system (like TGV Lyria, SNCF and Deutsche Bahn), this can also be accessed and booked using the SBB app.

Which European rail journeys can be booked using the SBB app?

From November, journeys between Switzerland and destinations in all neighbouring countries, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg will be bookable on the SBB app. A smattering of other popular routes between Swiss cantons and European destinations will also be available including London, Barcelona and Bratislava.

However, it will still be some time before people can book journeys across Europe using SBB. Night train services in Switzerland cannot be booked using the SBB app “yet” but can be purchased on their website and in person at SBB travel centres.
