Though we are often pleased when our new phone number is easy to remember or has an interesting combination, would you ever spend money on securing your favourite set of 10 digits? That’s what one man from Zurich is banking on, having put a number up for sale for 100.000 Swiss francs.

"Exclusive" phone number auctioned in Switzerland

"Secure one of the most exclusive phone numbers in Switzerland," the ad on the bidding site Ricardo reads. As part of the listing, anyone with a mobile phone and money to spare can bid for the number 076 777 77 77. 

"This exclusive opportunity is aimed at serious prospective buyers who value individuality and prestige…This unique, memorable number will stylishly distinguish you or your company. Whether for personal or business purposes, this number guarantees attention and recognition," the ad continues. Though the final price will likely be decided by auction, anyone can buy out the number for 100.000 francs.

Speaking to Blick, Stefan confirmed that he had been using the number for several years. Upon hearing that other people online were auctioning off interesting numbers, he decided to sell his. 

When asked whether he found it difficult to sell the number, he said “No, the loss is limited, since it’s only something superficial” - not surprising, given he could stand to make a profit of 100.000 francs.

The idea of securing memorable, short or interesting numbers for your own is a weird quirk of Swiss culture. This is seen most vividly in number plates, where drivers spend thousands of francs to register their car with a low or special number. At the time of writing, the auction record is held by ZH24, which sold in July 2024 for 299.000 francs.
