Cost of electricity in Switzerland to fall in 2025
After years of price rises, the vast majority of people in Switzerland will finally see their energy bills fall. Energy providers from across the country have confirmed that electricity prices will drop when tariffs are renewed for 2025.
Energy prices in Switzerland finally set to fall
Anyone who pays for their electricity in Switzerland - homeowners and many people who rent their homes - has seen their bills rise dramatically over the last few years, thanks to a combination of unstable energy markets caused by the war in Ukraine and the ensuing push to conserve energy in late 2022 and early 2023. For instance last year the Federal Electricity Commission (ElCom) estimated that average tariffs in Switzerland rose by 18 percent in 2024.
Now, with global energy markets stabilising and with the government expected to cut its rates for transporting and storing energy, 20 Minuten wrote that it is “certain” that electricity prices will drop next year. This decrease is expected to be an average of 8 percent.
Where will Swiss electricity prices fall in 2025?
Though ElCom is yet to publish its nationwide figures, the vast majority of providers have indicated that prices will fall in 2025. Here are some of the specific figures we know so far:
Energy prices to fall in Zurich
The provider for Canton Zurich, EKZ confirmed to Blick that customers in the region should expect to pay 12 percent less for electricity in 2025, meaning a household with an annual consumption of 2.500-kilowatt hours should save 110 francs. The provider for the city of Zurich EWZ confirmed that their prices will also fall, though only by between 4,5 and 30 francs a year.
Geneva and Lausanne residents to see lower power bills
For Geneva, local provider SIG wrote that because of a “drop in electricity prices on the market”, energy costs in the city will fall by 12 percent on average. In Canton Vaud, Romande Énergie said that 98 percent of its customers will pay less, but this will vary by city. For instance, Lausanne will see bills fall by 5,7 percent, compared to 11 percent in Nyon and 14,8 percent in Yverdon-les-Bains.
Providers across Switzerland announce lower electricity tariffs
In addition, so far the providers for Canton Bern (BKW, 6 percent), Lucerne (EWL, 19 percent), Aargau (AEW, 14 percent), Basel-Land (Primeo Energie, 1 percent), Obwalden (EWO, 10 percent), Zug (WWZ, 12 percent), Graubünden (Repower, 4 percent) and Fribourg (Group E, 11 percent) have all confirmed that prices will drop next year.
Will any part of Switzerland see higher bills?
Not everyone will see falling energy bills in 2025. The provider for the city of Basel IWB told reporters that power prices would remain the same, while Bern’s provider EWB said that its tariffs would rise by an average of 5 percent next year.
My canton isn't on the list, when will I know my energy tariff for 2025?
The rest of Switzerland likely has to wait until ElCom releases its nationwide figures for 2025 before they will know if their energy bills will rise, fall or stay the same. These figures are expected to be released on September 5, after which all cantonal and city energy companies will release their tariffs.
