An extraordinary and timeless musical production, French author Victor Hugo's famous work Les Misérables will be brought to the stage in Geneva. It's a gripping tale of broken dreams, unrequited love, passion, sacrifice, redemption and revolution.

Les Misérables in English

Les Misérables is bringing its new format on tour, and for the first time in French-speaking Switzerland, it will be performed in English with French surtitles.

With iconic songs such as "I Dreamed a Dream", "Bring Him Home", "One Day More" and many more, this epic and moving musical is undoubtedly one of the world's best-loved. After 39 years of performances in 53 countries and 439 cities around the world, Les Misérables holds the record for being the longest-running musical in the world.

The Arena Musical Spectacular is a new adaptation of the musical, specially designed to be performed in large halls that have been transformed into giant theatres. Performed by an English company, this imposing production involves more than 110 people, including actors, musicians and the touring crew.

The history of Les Misérables

The novel Les Misérables was written by the acclaimed French author Victor Hugo and published in 1862. It is one of the longest novels ever written and is widely considered one of the greatest books of all time.

The plot is, as befits its length, complex and convoluted with many asides and adjuncts, but broadly it follows the story of Jean Valjean, a convicted criminal who is working to become a force for good in the world. It explores the concepts of human nature, love, civilisation, revolution, law and order, and society. It is not an obvious choice to turn into a musical!

In 1980, French musicians Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg released a concept album based on the story of Les Misérables, which eventually found its way into the hands of Cameron Mackintosh, the London-based theatre producer who had recently had a hit production with Cats - another surprising topic for a musical.

With the Royal Shakespeare Company and the original French composers, it was turned into the huge musical that has been running in London ever since. In 2012, it was adapted once again, into a major Hollywood film starring Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway.
