Matterhorn Eagle Cup Golf Tournament

Aug 31, 2024
Canton Valais

Imagine a golf championship that takes place not on a golf course, but across an Alpine landscape. Golfers, get ready for this "adventure golf" event, where teams hike together through the world-renowned Swiss Alps to complete the nine-hole tournament. It’s the Matterhorn Eagle Cup!

Experience an exceptional golf tournament in the Swiss Alps

In the Gornergrat area, between Rotenboden and Riffelberg, expect to find one of the most extreme golf courses imaginable! This nine-hole golf course is between 2.800 and 1.400 metres above sea level, located at the foot of one of the most famous mountains in the world, the Matterhorn.

The Matterhorn Eagle Cup golf tournament began in the early 90s, with 65 golfers playing on a six-hole golf course located between Schwarzsee and Stafelalp. The tournament grew throughout the decade, to 156 participants in 2001. The organisers were pleased to see the event grow and evolve, but the intimate nature of the event has been maintained since the early 2000s because outgrowing the course would have done an injustice to the event's identity.

Practical information

Here are some pieces of practical information to keep in mind if you are considering taking part:

The golf course is accessible from Zermatt by the Gornergrat mountain railway. The course is for players with a minimum handicap of 30. Players should be in good physical form due to the uneven and often steep terrain. Mobile phones are prohibited on the course, and players are strongly advised to wear weatherproof clothing and footwear. Players should use three different golf clubs of their choice.

Play will continue even in poor weather, but if it becomes too dangerous, there are alarms that will sound to advise the players.
