The 10 best things about life in Switzerland

The 10 best things about life in Switzerland

Many people overseas often question why people move to the alpine nation. Well, wonder no longer! From the calm of Sundays to the thrill of alpine sports, here are some of our favourite things about living in Switzerland.

1. The picture-postcard landscape of Switzerland

We often fantasise about living amidst stunning surroundings that could be the subject of a painting or postcard. Living in Switzerland makes that dream a reality, as even if you live in a city, the country's mountains, lakes and rivers are just a stone’s throw away.

Switzerland is a top destination for those who love the outdoors. If you want to have a picnic while gazing at snowcapped mountains above azure-coloured lakes and painting-like forests, then the alpine nation is hard to beat.

2. Swiss food

Occasionally the time is right to ditch the diet and indulge in something hearty, and Swiss food is perfect for that. From Swiss cheese, fondue, wine and chocolate, to potato dishes like Rösti and do-it-yourself-delicacies like Raclette, Switzerland promises a tasty - yet somewhat heavy - banquet every time.

3. Public festivals in Switzerland

Switzerland’s public holidays and festivals are a great way to see the country at its best. Each city and canton will have its own events that really give residents a chance to let their hair down and party - a far cry from the “cold and stern” Swiss stereotypes you may have heard in the past!

From the off-key Guggenmusik of Basel Fasnacht to the burning of the Böögg at Sechseläuten, the alpine nation’s traditional events are a sight to behold. The county is also home to a number of modern events: Pride parades, the Zurich Street Parade and the Montreux Jazz Festival to name a few.

4. The captivating cities

Swiss cities are regularly voted as some of the best places to live as an expat, and it’s easy to see why! Whether it be strolling Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich, swimming in the Rhine in Basel, taking in the covered streets of Bern, sampling the wide boulevards of Geneva or sunning yourself in Lausanne, the country’s cities are a real highlight.

5. The quality of life in Switzerland

The quality of life in Switzerland is one of the highest in the world, thanks to stable institutions, high salaries and efficient services. The beauty of the country combines well with easy access to jobs, excellent healthcare and social services, creating the extremely high standard of living that most residents of the alpine nation enjoy.

6. The Swiss transport network

Bored of where you live? Don’t worry, thanks to its world-beating public transport network, some of Switzerland's top cities and things to do are usually only a few hours away by bus, tram, train or even boat!

Alongside normal trains, the more unique services give you an interesting and special way to experience Switzerland’s top attractions. The mountain railways and Glacier Express, for example, are great ways to see the country in style and comfort. What’s more, if you are really bored of Switzerland, Italy, Germany, France and Austria are just a short journey away.

7. Switzerland’s castles and history

Switzerland has a long and fascinating history that is often overlooked. First founded by the original three cantons (Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden) in 1291, the alpine nation has seen wars, social movements, religion and politics shape the country into what we see today. For example, Switzerland’s many national quirks like neutrality, banking secrecy, light Euroscepticism and direct democracy all have their roots in its history.

This history and set of traditions and values have been imprinted into the many historical sites, castles and museums in Switzerland. A visit to these and you won’t think Swiss history is boring ever again!

8. Skiing in winter and hiking in summer

The Swiss Alps are an adventure playground for 365 days a year. In the winter, the country offers some of the best ski resorts in the world like Davos, Arosa, Andermatt and Interlaken, with runs that cater to all skill levels.

Then, once the weather gets warmer, the mountains become a hiker’s paradise, with many exciting places to walk and explore. While it may make for a good holiday, if you live in Switzerland, all of this is right on your doorstep!

9. The stability and safety in Switzerland

Another great thing about living in Switzerland is how safe the country is. In comparison to other European nations, crime remains relatively rare, and the police and other emergency services are well-trained and equipped to deal with any disruption that may arise. The country also regularly ranks in the top 10 of the Global Peace Index.

10. Lazing on a Sunday afternoon

Finally, instead of a day for supermarkets and boutique shopping excursions, the Swiss Sunday is a time for people to get out into nature, meet friends and family and leave the working week behind. While it may be annoying at times, the fact that most shops close on Sunday means it's an ideal time to disconnect from work and enjoy all the wonderful things we’ve already mentioned on this list.

1. through 10 is Salary, 11. Taxes. Weather is not so good in Switzerland, too often foggy in the Winter and extremely hot in the Summer. The rest is 100% accurate, best country on Earth.
