3 mountain coasters to try this summer in Switzerland

Aug 25, 2024

Switzerland is a top destination, known for its stunning mountain landscapes and majestic alpine peaks. One of the most exciting ways to experience the Swiss Alps is on a mountain coaster (Rodelbahn). Rodelbahns are popular tourist attractions that are mostly enjoyed in the summer, although some do operate in the winter when the weather permits. Here are some unique alpine coasters that are a must-try if you feel adventurous this summer.

What is a Swiss mountain coaster (Rodelbahn)?

A mountain coaster or Rodelbahn is a type of dry toboggan run found in the alpine regions of Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. On a dry toboggan run, you ride a bobsled-like cart down a track or rail, taking in bends, curves and slopes, and using levers on the cart to control your speed. Some tracks are suitable for families, while others cater to thrill-seekers with steeper descents, higher altitudes, and sharper turns.

These alpine coasters combine the excitement of speed with the breathtaking scenery provided by the Swiss mountains. Suitable for visitors of all ages, these rides cater to both the adventurous and the casual. Get ready to admire the Swiss Alps at these Rodelbahn locations.

1. The highest toboggan run: Glacier 3000

Experience the heights of the Alps on the highest toboggan run in the world - Glacier 3000. At an altitude of 2.970 meters, this ride offers a thrilling descent and breathtaking views of the Alps - on clear days you can see as far as famous peaks like Mont Blanc! Taking in 10 curves, six waves, and three jumps, and reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h (although you can determine your own speed with the brake lever), this ride will pump you up with adrenaline and make your heart skip a beat!

The Glacier 3000 toboggan is open from the beginning of April to the end of September but may be closed during periods of bad weather.

2. The longest toboggan run: Erlebnisberg Pradaschier

Located in Churwalden, the Erlebnisberg Pradaschier toboggan is one of the oldest and most popular alpine coasters in Switzerland. This run has a length of 3.060 meters, making it the longest in Switzerland. Each ride lasts somewhere between seven and 10 minutes, depending on how fast you go. The fresh and sharp alpine breeze will whizz through your hair as you lean through 31 curves at speeds of up to 40 km/h.

Open year-round, The Erlebnisberg Pradaschier offers unique views in both summer and winter. Weather conditions may affect opening hours.

3. Switzerland’s family-friendly alpine rollercoaster: The Floomzer

Bring your family to this mountain coaster located in Flumserberg. The Floomzer is an idea family activity as it's not too steep, offering a smooth and relaxed descent suitable for the little ones. Start with a comfortable ascent to the top of the run on a 4-person chairlift and descend at any speed you like. Passengers will enjoy a scenic descent through lush forests surrounded by stunning views of the Swiss Alps.

The Floomzer is a popular summer attraction for both adventure seekers and families alike and is open daily from June to late October each year.
