Zeughauskeller named one of the world's most legendary restaurants
From exploring the historical sites and taking a boat cruise on the lake to sampling the nightlife and some of the cheap and free things to do around the city, there are many things on the Zurich bucket list that just have to be ticked off. Now, a new ranking by TasteAtlas has added a meal at the Zeughauskeller to the list, with the venue ranked as one of the most legendary restaurants in the world.
Most legendary restaurants in the world by TasteAtlas
To create their list of the most legendary restaurants in the world, TasteAtlas highlighted the eateries that are not “just places to grab a meal, but destinations in their own right, comparable to the world’s most famous museums, galleries and monuments.” For instance, in Naples, visiting the ruins of Pompeii is equally as important as sampling Neopolitan pizza, and the ranking serves to direct you to the best place to find the latter.
Bonus points were given to restaurants that have continued to operate for a number of years and those that maintain their traditional recipes and authenticity. "Here, the focus is on real food with robust flavours, often using time-honoured recipes passed down through generations," TasteAtlas wrote.
Zeughauskeller in Zurich named one of the world's legends
As part of the ranking, Zurich’s own Zeughauskeller was rated as one of the most legendary restaurants in the world, placing 37th. The eatery on the east side of Paradeplatz was joined by restaurants in Austria, Italy, India and Germany in the higher echelons of the list.
Founded in 1926, Zeughauskeller has become a go-to destination for locals and tourists looking to sample the best of Zurich and Swiss cuisine. As the name suggests, the restaurant is based in an old armoury, with patrons dining amid old Swiss halberds, muskets and an Oerlikon anti-aircraft gun from the Second World War. Tables are wedged close together, producing a lively atmosphere similar to a German Bierhalle.
Züricher Geschnetzeltes the dish to go for, says TasteAtlas
In terms of what to eat at the Zeughauskeller, along with the various types of sausages and schnitzels, TasteAtlas recommended a well-known Zurich delicacy: Züricher (or Züri) Geschnetzeltes. The dish consists of thinly sliced veal or pork in a rich, creamy mushroom and white wine sauce, served with copious amounts of rösti - a great meal to have when the weather gets freezing.
While most Zürichers would argue that the Zeughauskeller makes a mean schnitzel, TasteAtlas ranked Figlmüller from Vienna and its Schnitzel Wiener Art as the most legendary restaurant and dish in the world. The famous pastrami sandwich of Katz's Delicatessen in New York and the Ikan goreng from Warung Mak Beng in Sanur, Indonesia rounded out the podium.
