Zurich to the Pyramids: Edelweiss to offer brand new routes from this winter
Edelweiss Air, Switzerland’s main holiday airline, has announced that a number of flights to new destinations will be taking off this winter. Alongside increased and expanded services to Nordic destinations, the plans will see Swiss planes land right next to the Great Pyramids for the first time.
Edelweiss to launch direct flights to the Pyramids of Giza
In a statement, the airline confirmed that it would be launching a new service between Zurich and Giza / Cairo Sphinx Airport. Unlike Cairo’s main airport to the east, which is already served by SWISS, the smaller airport is just a stone’s throw away from the city's main historical sites like the Sphinx, Pyramids and the soon-to-open Grand Egyptian Museum.
Two weekly flights are planned between Zurich and Giza, beginning on November 2, 2024. With Edelweiss Air also serving Luxor, it is hoped that the new connection could also help serve the flourishing river cruises on the Nile - perfect for those who want to live out their Agatha Christie fantasies.
For those who prefer sun, sea and sand over museums, the company will also be launching a new service to the Omani beach resort of Salalah. The flight will be a stopping service, travelling via the capital of Oman Muscat. The stunning and culturally vibrant city of Tunis will also be added to the Edelweiss route network this winter, while flights to the island of Djerba will be extended to run year-round.
New flights to Nordic nations planned this winter
Going from south to north, the new Edelweiss plan for this winter will also see expanded services to “guaranteed snow” destinations. This will include five weekly flights to the Norwegian city of Tromsø and a brand new flight to Evenes on the Lofoten Islands. However, at the same time, the Edelweiss flight to Bergen will be cut to only run during the summer.
Getting tired of Swiss ski resorts? Edelweiss will also be offering routes between Zurich and the Finnish resorts of Ivalo and Kittilä, along with the Christmas haven of Rovaniemi.
Finally, the airline confirmed that flights will be expanded between Zurich, Cape Verde and Morocco, and services between the Swiss airport and Bilbao, Ibiza, Antalya, Cagliari, Faro and Split will either be extended into winter for the first time or have their start dates moved forward in 2025.
