SWISS to auction off economy seats for charity

For those craving the airport and airline experience, Switzerland’s national airline, SWISS, is auctioning off a number of economy seats for a good cause, as the airline upgrades the interior of some of its planes. The proceeds will be donated to their long-standing disability charity partner, the Pigna Foundation.

SWISS to upgrade to premium economy seating

The seats will be taken from SWISS’s economy section, with the company planning to replace the seats with a new premium economy seating class. The seats will be taken from the company’s 12 Boeing 777-300ER planes and have been available for bidding on the auction site Ricardo since March 14.

The seats will be sold as sets of three (a row) and they come with a personalised nameplate for the new owners. All of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Pigna Foundation, which focuses on supporting people with disabilities so that they can work and live a comfortable life, with tailored care.

Four sets of economy seats available for purchase

There are four sets of seats up for grabs, with the online auction taking place for the next four weeks. SWISS has stressed that the seats cannot be separated from each other.

The company's upgrade to economy premium will give passengers the option to pay more for extra legroom and seats that can recline more, for much cheaper than the cost of a business class ticket. The Premium Economy ticket also includes other perks such as two free pieces of baggage, priority boarding and a greater choice of food on board.
