From July 1, retirees in Lausanne will be given 50 percent off public transport tickets which grant unlimited travel around the city, to help with rising costs. In just seven days, authorities have received 2.300 applications for the new scheme.

50 percent off travelling in one of the largest Swiss cities

Residents of Lausanne that claim a private pension and AHV are now entitled to 50 percent off travel in the city centre. For those receiving retirement benefits, unlimited travel in and around the capital of Canton Vaud will now only cost 40 Swiss francs a year.

The scheme includes a “Mobilis subscription” for zones 11 and 12 in the Greater Lausanne area, allowing unlimited travel on metro, tram and bus services in the heart of the city and the outskirts. The 30.000 people who are eligible for the scheme will be informed about the deal by post. 

2.300 pensioners apply for cheap transport tickets in Lausanne

In a press release, the council said it wanted to make movement around the city easier for the elderly, while also supporting their “purchasing power.” According to their estimates, the new scheme will cost the city around 3 million Swiss francs a year.

Pensioners will now be able to join 11 to 20-year-olds in benefitting from discount public transport in Lausanne. Less than a week after the discount was announced, city authorities confirmed that 2.300 people had already been in touch about the new deal.
