Several injured at municipal fireworks display in Fribourg

Several people were reportedly injured at a municipal firework display celebrating Swiss National Day in Canton Fribourg during the night of July 31. A 29-year-old woman who had been burned was taken from the event in Villars-sur-Glâne to a nearby hospital.

Police state around 10 people injured

According to Blick, the police said that there were around 10 people injured at the fireworks display. The injuries were obtained when some of the fireworks set off by the municipality shot into the crowd, rather than upwards into the night sky.

At 11pm, the emergency services received a call from the event asking for assistance. Police arrived rapidly to help organise the event after the panic ensued.

Firework event had around 3.000 attendees

The event, which had around 3.000 attendees, was shortened after the incident, and the firework display was cancelled. So far, no reason has been found for the fireworks to have shot into the crowd the way that they did. An investigation into the causes is ongoing.

After the incident, the fire service stayed present for the rest of the event to make sure there were no further pyrotechnical issues. "There was no longer any danger to the population," the police told Blick, and the event finished smoothly.
