Travellers visiting the stunning historical city of Fribourg in Switzerland will now be given quite the thank-you present for their visit. Authorities in the city have confirmed that people with hotel stays booked will be given a complimentary public transport ticket for the surrounding area, along with free access to many amenities.

Free Fribourg / Freiburg Ticket launches in Switzerland

In a statement released on March 11, officials in Fribourg announced the launch of the Fribourg / Freiburg Ticket. They said that the new pass was designed to “warmly welcome" guests to the city, by making travelling around the area cheaper and easier.

Under the plans, all visitors who have a hotel stay booked in the city will be given the Fribourg Ticket for free. The pass will give travellers unlimited access to the local public transport network, specifically Zone 10 of the Frimobil tariff region.

Along with providing unlimited transport, the Fribourg Ticket will also give users free entry to the local swimming pool and the public ice rink. The pass will remain valid for the entire duration of the user’s stay in Fribourg.

Hopes free transport ticket will attract more tourists

According to the Fribourg Hotel Association, around 100.000 overnight stays are recorded in the city every year. Authorities added that the ticket was called for by hotels, who hope to see an increase in business thanks to the scheme. The local council has set aside 200.000 francs to fund the project, which will last for a year before it is reassessed.

Fribourg will join Swiss cities like Geneva and some ski resorts in offering hotel guests complimentary transport tickets for the local area. For more information about the scheme, check out the official press release.
