The latest Henley Passport Index has been released, and Switzerland has moved up one place in the ranking to be rated as having the fourth-most powerful passport in the world, allowing Swiss citizens visa-free access to 190 countries around the world. 

The Henley Passport Index 2024

Bringing together data on 199 different passports and more than 220 travel destinations, the Henley Passport Index is a ranking of the world’s most “powerful” passports - those that grant the holder access to the most countries around the world without a visa. The ranking is updated quarterly to reflect changes in immigration legislation. 

Based on data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA), the index awards different passports one point for every country their holders can access without needing to apply for a pre-departure visa. 

Switzerland has the joint-fourth-most powerful passport in the world

In January this year, the Swiss passport was ranked as the fifth most powerful in the world. As of July 2024, however, small changes in the ranking have seen Switzerland rise up to joint-fourth place, although its total point score (190) has remained the same. It shares fourth position with Belgium, Denmark, New Zealand, Norway and the UK. 

The country with the strongest passport in the world according to the July 2024 Index is Singapore, with citizens allowed to travel to 195 countries without a visa.

4. Belgium, Denmark, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, United Kingdom (190)
