Best restaurants in Switzerland revealed in latest GaultMillau guide

The latest GaultMillau guide has revealed the very best restaurants in Switzerland. The 2025 edition of the list sees a new chef and restaurant join the small cadre of eateries with the famed 19 GaultMillau points.

GaultMillau Swiss restaurant guide

Every year, the GaultMillau guide seeks to reveal which restaurants in Switzerland are the best of the very best. For their 2025 edition, the organisation reviewed 880 different restaurants from across the cantons. Unlike the Michelin Guide, GaultMillau primarily focuses on the quality of the food on offer, rather than the overall dining experience.

Each restaurant analysed is given a number of Gault Millau points from one to 20, with 20 being the highest - restaurants given scores under 10 are rarely included in the guide. It’s important to note that since 2004, only four 20-point scores have been issued worldwide.

Ticino restaurant becomes 7th in Switzerland to get 19 GaultMillau points

This year, a brand new chef and restaurant in Switzerland were awarded 19 out of 20 points by GaultMillau: la Brezza at Eden Roc in Ascona, Canton Ticino. Their head chef Marco Campanella also won Chef of the Year.

“We decided on Marco Campanella because he never fails to amaze us: with his modern cuisine. With his incredible sauces. With his versatility. And with his talent for getting a young team excited about his mission," noted GaultMillau head Urs Heller. He was also given high praise for delighting vegan diners at his restaurant.

Which are the best restaurants in Switzerland?

La Brezza is just the seventh restaurant in Switzerland to achieve the fabled 19 out of 20 score from GaultMillau. The other 19 point restaurants are Stucki / Tanja Grandits and Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl in Basel, Domaine de Châteauvieux in Geneva, Schloss Schauenstein in Graubünden, Restaurant de l’Hôtel de Ville in Crissier Canton Vaud and The Restaurant at the Dolder Grand in Zurich.

In terms of other accolades, Magdalena in Rickenbach Canton Schwyz was awarded 18 points, making it the highest-rated vegetarian restaurant in Switzerland, while The Japanese Restaurant at the Chedi in Andermatt was named the “up-and-comer of the year.” “The Swiss restaurant scene is changing, not all chefs are able to hold their own. But the number of recommended restaurants remains high. Switzerland is a foodie paradise,” GaultMillau concluded.
