Which countries do people in Switzerland like to visit the most?
With 2024 now close to its end, families and individuals in Switzerland will be looking ahead and planning their next big holiday. To help whittle down your bucket list, travel agency Hotelplan has revealed the most popular destinations for residents to visit in 2024, and where holidaymakers are looking to travel to in 2025.
Long, personalised trips favourite among travellers from Switzerland
According to a Hotelplan survey, 83 percent of people in Switzerland plan to travel abroad in 2025, “a clear signal of the unbroken desire to travel,” the company noted. In 2024, they found that rather than all-inclusive trips with coach-loads of travellers, people in Switzerland increasingly looked for vacations which are tailored to their individual desires.
68 percent of Hotelplan bookings for 2024 and 77 percent of 2025 bookings so far are for trips without children. This year, 16 percent of reservations were for holidays of up to three days long, 41 percent were for four to seven days, 38 percent lasted longer than a week and 10 percent were longer than two weeks. Mini-breaks don’t seem to be popular in 2025 either, with more than half of bookings so far being for longer than seven days.
This year, Hotelplan found that Greece, Spain, Egypt and Turkey were the most popular beach destinations among people in Switzerland. North America, Thailand and Finland were a favourite among solo travellers, while cruises and trips to Europa Park also remained extremely popular.
Where are people in Switzerland planning to visit in 2025?
For 2025, Hotelplan found that trips to the Mediterranean will remain the most popular, though an increasing number of travellers are heading to Scandinavia for a “coolcation” to avoid the extremely hot conditions in southern Europe in the summer. Montenegro, Corsica, Malta and the Azores are all expected to be up-and-coming destinations in 2025.
Further afield, Hotelplan predicted that Peru is the dark horse when it comes to visits from Switzerland. The nation, which sports “a diverse culture and impressive culinary offering”, is expected to be one of the main “insider picks” of 2025. Madagascar and the French Antilles like Guadeloupe, Saint Martin and Martinique will also be very popular next year.
Which holiday destinations should I avoid in 2025?
Though some may enjoy the fact that their holiday destination is one of the trends of the year, many are increasingly worried about over-tourism ruining their vacation. In Switzerland, many top destinations and ski resorts have debated tourist taxes and entry fees to slow tourism numbers.
According to the US magazine Fodor, which publishes an over-tourism “blacklist” every year, Sicily (Italy), the Caribbean, Kerala (India), Kyoto and Tokyo (Japan), Oaxaca (Mexico) and the North Coast 500 (Scotland) are the destinations which are starting to be seriously hit with over-tourism.
At the same time, Bali (Indonesia), Mallorca and the Canaries (Spain), Venice (Italy), Lisbon (Portugal), Ko Samui (Thailand) and Mount Everest were rated as the destinations where mass tourism is having a harmful impact, but for which nothing or very little is being done.
